1:30 PM EDT: Superbugs: Knowledge Is Our Best Defense

This session is designed to provide a general overview of antibiotic-resistant organisms, so-called superbugs, in clinical settings: their definition; types; causes; mechanism of action; and impact on patients and healthcare settings. Based on this understanding and microbiology review, the steps of intervention and prevention will be discussed to eliminate and minimize the propagation of superbugs. If they are not controlled in timely manner, they will continue to have a huge direct and indirect impact on all of us.

Learning Outcomes: After the session, attendees will be able to define types of superbugs in clinical settings; understand the steps needed to mitigate and prevent the of spread of superbugs; and understand how to engage in decision-making to keep patients safe.
