Infusion Flow-Control Devices and Pump Safety: Building the Foundation

Selecting the appropriate infusion flow-control device requires an understanding of infusion pump technology capabilities and the needs of the clinical systems in which they are used for infusion therapy. This session provides a foundational overview of factors that influence flow-control device selection, key infusion pump safety features, and the role of smart pumps and dose-error reduction systems (DERS) in supporting medication safety.
Participants will explore device technology differences, drug library configuration, dead volume, management of fluid container overfill, how administration set and accessory design can contribute to medication errors, and clinical sources and implications for dosing accuracy. Through evidence-based discussion and case study examples, learners will build a systems-based understanding of how infusion technology, clinical practice and organizational safety strategies work together to promote safe, accurate, and effective infusion therapy.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, learners will be able to:
- Explain factors used to select the appropriate flow-control device for infusion therapy
- Identify essential infusion pump safety features that support safe medication delivery
- Describe the role of smart pumps for reducing infusion-related medication errors and adverse drug events
- Evaluate flow rate accuracy, dead volume and fluid container overfill and explore their implications on medication and fluid delivery
- Identify how administration-set design and accessory devices contribute to dead volume and influence medication delivery
Jeannine Blake, PhD, RN

Jeannine Blake, PhD, RN, is a nurse scientist with a clinical background in surgical intensive care nursing and a passion for advancing health care innovation using an interdisciplinary nurse-engineer approach. Her research focuses on improving intravenous (IV) pumping technology accuracy, flow steadiness, usability, and reducing alarm burden on nurses and patients. She is dedicated to improving patient outcomes, streamlining nursing workflows, and integrating IV pumps more effectively into real-world clinical practices.
Dr Blake earned her PhD in Nursing Science and completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is now an Assistant Professor in the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing and is affiliated with the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation.

Karen Meade, MS, APRN-CNS, AGCNS-BC, OCN, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where her work focuses on advancing safe, evidence-based infusion therapy practices. Her clinical and scholarly interests include intravenous smart pump technology, medication delivery, infusion system design, and the ways nurses interact with infusion devices in complex care environments. Ms Meade has presented nationally on considerations and limitations associated with intravenous smart pump medication administration and the implications of infusion technology for patient safety. Karen is also a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where her research examines the use of intravenous smart pump-generated data to better understand alarm phenomena, nurse-pump interactions, and opportunities to improve the safety and effectiveness of infusion therapy.
